On Wednesday 17th September, officers from North West Counter Terrorism Unit (NWCTU) assisted by Wales Extremism and Counter Terrorism Unit (WECTU) executed a search warrant under Schedule 5 TACT at an address in Cardiff.
The property in Dogfield Street, Cathays was searched by specially trained officers and a number of items were seized as part of the search. This warrant is part of an ongoing investigation.
Assistant Chief Constable, Nikki Holland said:
“South Wales Police is proud to have strong links with our local communities and their cooperation is vital to make sure that we tackle radicalisation and extremism effectively together.
“The ongoing commitment to fight this threat has seen 37 arrests across Wales since 2010 and the execution of numerous warrants relating to terrorism and extremism investigations. Every case that has entered the court system has resulted in a guilty verdict , over half of which were guilty pleas and with the longest sentence being almost 17 years.
“We also use our powers only when proportionate to do so, working closely with partners and communities to try and divert people from engaging in unlawful activity by use of the Prevent programme and initiatives such as the Channel Project.
“The issue is not unique to Cardiff or Wales and is a priority for police across the UK and suggestions that Cardiff has a particular problem with young men and extreme views, is simply wrong. While we do have our share of challenges, our religious communities here in south Wales are strong and constructive.
“Wales, including its capital city, is still one of the safest places to live, work, and enjoy. The public should be reassured that we will continue to work with all partners to keep our communities safe.”
